Senior moves in Berlin: a fresh start in later life with Umzugskracher
Especially in a big city like Berlin, a multi-storey building can become a real problem for people. Lots of stairs, rarely a lift and rarely step-free access. Berlin’s period buildings were simply not designed for senior citizens. It makes no difference whether you have just reached retirement age or are already over 80 – a move is still possible later in life. If that worries you, you are not alone.
Many older people do not dare to leave their home behind. Nostalgia plays a big part here. Perhaps you lived here for decades with a partner who has since passed away, perhaps you started your family here, or perhaps you even grew up here yourself. It is completely understandable that you would not want to leave. However, old flats and houses have the disadvantage that they are often cold, that much of them is worn out and outdated, or that the building itself has defects.
So you should not let fears guide you, and you should take the plunge if that is what you want – because the versatile and professional moving service from Umzugskracher helps you make your senior move as relaxed and straightforward as possible.

Senior moves in Berlin: calmly planned, cleanly carried out
Senior moves are an everyday occurrence in Berlin. Yet they are never a simple matter — neither for the people affected nor for the moving helpers. There are often plenty of memories and emotions involved, and sometimes a little uncertainty too. That is exactly why speed alone is not what counts here, but rather calm, a clear overview, empathy – and above all: good planning. Who wants to be working out on moving day how the heavy wardrobe is going to get down the stairwell?
What really matters in a senior move
A senior move is not just about getting furniture from A to B. What matters more is that everything is well prepared. Which pieces of furniture should come along? What can go into storage? Where is particular care needed? We clarify questions like these together, so that in the end nothing is left to chance.
Personal, careful and well organised
In Berlin in particular, every move is a little different. Sometimes there is an old building without a lift, sometimes narrow hallways, sometimes pieces of furniture that still mean a great deal to someone. That is precisely where experience and a proven approach are needed. We support you so that the move does not become a burden, but stays comfortably manageable step by step.
Here is what you can expect from Umzugskracher:
- Personal, empathetic advice instead of assembly-line work.
- Careful handling of furniture, pictures and keepsakes.
- Help with packing, transport and assembly.
- Clear arrangements and reliable appointments.
If you are looking for a senior moving service in Berlin that works reliably rather than in a rush, you have come to the right place. When may we get started for you? Our team is ready.
Senior move Berlin: hands-on support when a new chapter is about to begin
A senior move means far more than simply carrying moving boxes from A to B. In later life especially, starting a new chapter is not easy. That is why we support you not only with the transport, but also with the steps before and after it. On request, that includes clearing out the property or the sale of furniture and household items when not everything is to come along to the new flat or care home.
Personal advice directly on site
On request we hold discreet conversations on site, so that we can assess the situation accurately and find the best solution together. That way it becomes clear early on what needs to be taken along, sold, disposed of or prepared for further use.
Coordination with care and assisted-living facilities
When moving into a nursing home or retirement home in particular, sound planning is essential. We therefore coordinate the planning period together with the management of the nursing or retirement home, so that everything runs smoothly and unnecessary stress is avoided.
What we can take care of for you:
- Clearance and household clearance.
- Sale or passing on of selected furniture.
- Discreet on-site viewing and consultation.
- Scheduling with the nursing or retirement home.
- Organised handling of the entire move.
Changing where you live in later life: we will manage it together!
It is fair to say that a move in later life should by no means be an impossibility. More than that, it is a wonderful step that you should not shy away from! But since a move can undoubtedly involve a lot of work, sweat and tears, it is worth asking for help. Ask friends and family whether they are willing to be at your side on the big day. If not — or as additional outside help — you should consult a moving company.
Moving companies like our team at Umzugskracher know their way around every kind of move. We are also happy to carry out senior moves and do so frequently, which means we have plenty of experience in looking after you and your belongings!

Can I get a subsidy for a move for people with severe disabilities?
Anyone with recognised severe disability status may well have good reason to move. Often an old household with no level-access shower, too many stairs or no lift simply cannot be reconciled with the degree of disability. Everyday life then becomes a torment, or perhaps even undeniably difficult. But it should not have to be that way!
If you have recognised severe disability status and would like to move, German social legislation provides financial subsidies for you! How many euros this subsidy amounts to and where you can apply for it is an individual matter, and varies both from city to city and according to your degree of disability.
An application for such a subsidy should, however, be submitted before the move and not afterwards. As soon as you are sure that you want to move, you should also apply for the subsidies, as this can take a while. Make use of them and make your move considerably easier on yourself.
